First Poo in the Potty!

She was in the bath, poking her butt, which is unusual, she usually digs in the front. Next thing I know I see small floaties. Yikes! I swooped her up and dropped her on the toilet. She sat like a good girl and finshed!

I have pics, but unfortunetly, she hid my memory card somewhere, so until I find it: standby.

However, she wasn't finshed. Afterwards, I cleaned her up and got her ready for bed as usual. I then put her in front of Shrek so I could get my shower done. As I was getting out she greets me with a handful of poo and a sad face. She knew she was in big trouble. Why can't she just not do it? Geez!

Her first Session!

Wow, it's amazing how much can be learned in 40 minutes.

An Occupational Therapist named Ashley came this morning, arms loaded with toys. The first toy she pulled out was a plastic contracption with 4 holes on top that you place balls in. The trick is you have to push the balls into the holes, so it's a challenge. So, Ashley begins passing the balls to Amelia and asking her to say please while signing it (rub circles on your chest). She did this over and over and over, until Amelia started doing it. It was the cutest thing! When she asked please she would rub her belly. Hee hee. And yes, eventually she got the balls in the hole without help and did that over and over...

Ashley also asked me about Amelia's tendencies to want to bang her head on things. Yes, she mostly does when she's upset or frustrated, but she does do it sometimes just because. She told me she may like the pressure feeling she gets from it. What I can do before I anticipate her banging is place pressure anywhere on her body. And of course, redirect her when she starts to bang. The pressure thing also makes sense in that she has recently picked up pinching (not to be mean) but just likes to pinch squishy skin, and spinning, which are all tied together in wanting to feel sensations.

And...she made me feel really good about her "A" diagnosis. She asked me what her official diagnosis was, and all I could say was "Ya know, as soon as the Doctor blurted out the "A" word I really didn't hear anything he said after that, so let me go get the report..." She pointed out that she was diagnosed as having PDD (perceptive disoder) which is at the bottom cusp of the "A" umbrella. Like boarderline, "she doesn't have it, but possesses a few of the symptoms" catagory.

I also have to say she is doing so much better in pointing. Because that was one of the doctor's main concerns was that she didn't point to things, I made a point to point it out to her! When we flip through books I ask "Where's the dog?" Then take her hand and make her point to the dog and say "There's the dog!" Before I always did the pointing, but making her do it makes a world of difference. It really is amazing. Now she points at random things, even if they're not important, ha ha. GOOD!

Her Speech Evaluation

Today she had her first appointment with HKIS, the state funded developmental program. Two ladies came for the eval. One played and tested Amelia while the other drilled me with questions. Amelia was very cooperative and did even more than I thought she could! She shared toys with me as well as them when asked, jumped on command, mimicked sounds they made and even did the puzzles...correctly! Ha ha. It took about an hour and a half, and when finished they went over it with me. Basically, as we know, she was on target for everything except speech and few minor communication areas (really?!) They want to work on getting her interested in book pictures and pointing to things when asked as well. That's something she really has no interest in.

So, overall, very pleased that someone that does this for a living was able to come to our home, see her in her element, and figure out what to do to help her! I'll be getting the official report in the mail in a few weeks, then we can draw up a plan special for her. Can't wait to begin!

I'm still warming up to the news given to me by the hospital on Thursday. Thank God Tammy was with me because otherwise I would not have heard anything the doctor said. To start, we arrived 20 minutes late because I got lost. Dr. Ching and a speech pathologist evaluated Amelia. She was good, but not doing the things they had laid out for her to do as well as I had hoped. After her little tests they sent us to the waiting room. Then they called us back and laid it out for us. Yes, she has a speech problem. But she also has a communication problem. She lacks the ability to relate to others, or relay her feelings. I guess, in a nutshell. So, he says it. The "A" word. And I lost it. He says she’s within the realm of an "Autism Spectrum Disorder". But diagnosing her with this can get her good help in good programs, even though she only displays some of the symptoms. She doesn't have any weird behaviors, but just needs help catching up. But still, it is so misunderstood, even I don’t. And I am not okay labeling her with that. Let’s just say she's slow, k?

Potty Introduction

We've had a long time bath routine. First we signal we're finished, I drain the tub, pick up the toys and wipe down all excess water from the floor (she is an excellent water kicker), then before I pick her up I ask her if she has pee pee and point to her vagina. She will look down and pee. So, we've established what pee pee is. Time to make the transition! Now, for the past few nights, after the bath I pick her up and place her on the pot (I have her baby seat on the toilet). No luck so far. However, just now after her nap I noticed her diaper was dry so I decided to try it. (For the record, she loves sitting up there, grins all around.) She couldn't resist digging in her vagina the entire time, but she did tinkle!! Very happy. :)

Her Evaluation Appointment

Her appointment at Tripler was this morning! She was a really good girl. The pediatrician's name was Dr. Chan, he conducted several small tests to test her language and cognitive skills. She scored average in cognitive and below in language (go figure!) I was able to tell him everything she does and doesn't do, and tell him my concerns which made me a very happy mama! So, we have another appointment to redo basically the same tests with him along with their speech pathologist on April 15th. In the meantime, he referred us to a state program that will come and evaluate Amelia from home to see if she qualifies. Also, we will be going back to get a hearing test done, it's routine anyways.

So I decided to be proactive and call the doc to see if it could be hearing related. I thought it could be a start. She checked her out and seemed to see nothing wrong there (thank goodness). After filling her in on the things Amelia isn't doing at 20 months, she thinks she may have a learning delay. But does she? After all, she only learns what I teach her, right? So if she can't point to body parts, and I haven't really covered those bases, wouldn't it be my fault? She also never has to ask me for things because I already anticipate the things she wants. I may be an enabler.

Nonetheless, I will follow through with Tripler's Developmental Center. I want to know from a professional what I need to do to get her on track. She is a smart cookie, she is developing completing normal aside from the lack of verbal communication. We'll get there soon enough, I'm sure.

Two big things have happened.

1. Because she is the size of her crib mattress, we have just full blown converted her into a full sized bed. She also wakes up still to come get me in the night. I usually crawl into her crib with her and sleep, and I just can't take it anymore! Now, I will fit! Last night was her first night in her new big girl bed and I think she may have been scared. She cried every time I tried to lay in it with her, but later was fine. Who knows.

2. She took her first poo in the tub. I had to scoop it with my hand, gross!

My poor baby

What was supposed to be a well check appt yesterday morning turned into a regular visit. Come to find out she's got her first ear infection. I would have never guessed that, she never once signaled to me that her ear bothered her. I assumed it was her throat because all she does is drool and cry when she swallows or coughs. She was extremely congested, faucet nosed, fever and all. I felt so bad and completely helpless not being able to make her feel better. She has been on amoxicillin for a few days now and is doing much better.

Yesterday was a groundbreaking day for her!

Yesterday morning, as all mornings, she walks up to my face and stares at me with her big silly grin. I open my eyes and say "good morning baby" and she says "hi" clear as day.

Later, she was playing with her books next to Chris and his buddy Fred. Usually she makes a very common "shu jits" noise, but this time it sounded more like "what's this?" This makes perfect sense because when we read books I point and ask "what's this?".

Then...that evening she wanted to sit in her carseat while Dad was installing his car stereo. I stood next to her, and she kept reaching for me saying "gish gish gish". Then I realized she wanted to kiss me! So we played that game over and over.

I really hope she keeps this up! A lot of times she starts doing something and stops. I have been anticipating talking since she was born, so her being slow is KILLING ME! Ha ha, I'm just so excited that she is finally trying. Now I have to figure out all the other sounds she makes...

On a sad note, my perfect little baby bubble world has been compromised. She has caught a nasty cold with a fever. I was up with her all night last night. Hearing her cough up junk and watching snot pour down her face is breaking my heart.

She is growing so quickly and ever evolving, it's hard to put every little thing up here! So here's a few highlights:

Bedtime is still a struggle. She wakes up on average at least once a night still ever since converting her bed. She crawls in my bed in stealth mode until she begins to fidget. I'm so used to getting up it's no longer a big deal now to get up to put her back in bed, and it only takes a few minutes.

She is still not really talking. I try really hard not to get concerned, I know all kids do things at their own pace, but most kids her age are saying a few words by now. She says dog when she looks at Lucy, but that's really about the only consistent "real" word she uses. She knows exactly what she wants and she knows how to show me what she wants. Everything is a pull of the finger. It makes it difficult when everything can be accomplished with a gesture!

She has discovered her eyes, nose and vagina. Keeping her fingers out of them is fun.

She kisses with her mouth closed and gives the best neck choking hugs!

She is getting really good with electronics. She can navigate her entire DS Mario game (switching from mario game to minigames), turn on the super nintendo on the big tv and play some of it, she knows moving the mouse on the computer turns it on so she will move the mouse, crawl up on the seat and start clicking all over the place, and she loves to turn on her movie!

She still LOVES watching music videos. Not kid songs, real music. We have a library of about 15 songs that are her favs.

Potty training? Yah right. She doesn't seem the least bit interested yet. I have a feeling she will never warm up to her baby potty and will go directly to the big one. The closest we are at it is she knows to close the lid after I flush. Ha ha.

It has begun.

Last night she woke up crying. I went in there, checked her out, calmed her down and put her back into bed (screaming). It's midnight, I'm exhausted, she'll live. So I get into bed, but the screams are getting louder. I open my eyes and here comes a little nugget running towards me at full speed. She climbs up in bed and cuddles under my arm.

It was too cute so I allowed her to lay with me for a little while until she starts fidgeting and playing on me. So enough of this, it's bedtime! Back to her bed she goes, and out of her bed she climbs. Ugh. She discovered something new. So she slept with me for the first time which equaled no sleep for me. Bummer!

Might as well convert her bed now.

Her pacifiying days are officially over! It's been 2 days and 3 nights now, and she really has been great about it. A little fussy in the day, but a little distraction always does the trick. Nap and bed time...forget about it. No big deal at all! I was so shocked! Although, last night she cracked me up going to bed. She "blah blah blahed, talk talk talked" while laying over my shoulder. Then she sits up and tries to eat my face, then my necklace, then my shirt. Silly kid!

15 month well check

Baby girl did good today! She whined as usual throughout the exams, but didn't seem as clingy as usual. She weighed 27.5 lbs (95%) and measured 32" (87%). That was our first time not being in the ninties! Her head measured 20.5" (>97%). She is growing so fast!
We are almost done with our shots, only one more visit until she starts school! I am so excited! Technically today should have been our last visit but she is behind on 2. I may or may not get her flu done then too.

She did great! A little anxious and clingy at first, but in no time she was brushing her teeth, my teeth and even tried the Dentist! Her only concern is the compaction of her bottom fronts. They are really close together. I told the dentist about my history, and she seems to think she may likely be a candidate of braces and extractions as well. Lets hope not!

We had our one year doctor’s appt. today. She whined and clung to me during her exam, but was fine for her TB test and blood test (random testing for anemia). Weirdo.

She's a walkin fool now! She does it all: walking, running and standing up without holding onto anything.

In the last few weeks she has began sharing. It's so cute. She shares everything, and if I don't accept it she will force me to by grabbing my hand and putting the item in it. She also fed me today for the first time! She has never shared her food with me before.

She is eating real food for the most part, but is really selective. She really only likes bread or starches. She is also in the beginning stage of phasing from bottle to whole milk. Funny thing, to this day she will not hold her own bottle, never has. But she will drink from a sippy cup, water bottle, straw and real cup all by herself. Silly kid! She tries to feed herself with a spoon too but it gets pretty messy.

She started saying "up" for a while but kind of stopped. So back to babble babble, dad did did dad, fart noises and what I like to call "the zombie apocalypse".

Her favorite thing to do is charge at you with her eyes closed. I think she thinks she is invisable! Her new fun passtime is being tossed onto a bed of pillows. She is getting a tanline from excessive beach beach beach! She really loves being outside, splashing, and feeding the birds. Don't worry, she gets 50spf slathered on with every dip, sits in the shade and wears a rash guard, hat and even water socks. I don't play!

It all started just today! She has been at it all day. She kept letting go of my hand and taking a few steps, then 3 and 5. I was only able to catch her taking a few, but she walked almost cleared across the room twice today. It's only going to get better with practice! Now that she has screwed up the courage, I think I may be screwed! Ha.

Figured I should take the time to write something. This little nugget is almost 11 months old already! Where did the time go, seriously?

So...lets see..what is she up to these days...

She is taking that next big step towards walking. I have for months held her hands and let her run amok, but I finally realized that she was not learning how to balance herself by doing this. So about 3 days ago I firmly started only holding one hand. The first day she would get so mad because she couldn't walk fast anymore, so she would throw herself on the floor and have a fit. We're over that hurdle, and she can walk pretty darn good! She only relies on me a little.

Yes, she has in recent weeks realized the power of a tantrum. When she really wants something I will hear about it!

She gets no more pacifiers except strictly at bedtime now.

She has 4 molars coming in all at the same time right now, I feel so bad for her! But she does great with it, I still to this day have not had to give her any medicine (knock on wood). So she's got all her front teeth in and we're cooking up the backs. Yippee skippee. I hate all this teething, but am looking forward to her getting to eat more types of food! Right now her favorite thing to eat is any kind of sandwich. She LOVES bread. She gets a turkey and muenster sandwich everyday for lunch, no crusts, cut into hand held strips. I am such a mom.

She is still just babbling, no real words yet. Although, I swear she says hi every once in a while. I say hi and wave to her all the time. (She will wave on command!)
She also loves to have conversations with herself in the mirror. Our closet doors are mirrors, so she likes to slide them back and forth while flirting with herself.

I think that's enough rambling for one sitting. Hope all you girls had a happy Mother's Day. I did...well the best I could :)

I loved this appointment...no shots! I always look forward to talking to the doctor about her progress and getting all her stats. She says she is very healthy, and had really no more to say! She was really impressed that she has never been sick (knock on wood) and I have not even given her medicine...ever.

She cried when I put her on the tables for measuring and weighing. Oh well, she got over it!

Can you believe she has grown 10 inches since she was born? Wow! She is such a big girl. I get comments all the time that she looks older than 9 months.

Her vocabulary is starting to morph into more various kinds of babble. Mostly mama's, but occasionally she will belt out a na na, ba ba, useless mumbo, and even a ya! She made her first y noise (that I have heard) yesterday.
I foresee a walking child soon. She has very good balance, she can stand on her own for about 5 seconds when she wants to. She is always testing her limits. For the past week her new favorite thing to do is hold my fingers and walk walk walk! She also loves it when she stands holding my fingers and I shake her and dance around! She gets the biggest kick when we boogie.

Mmmm...she just poo'd. And let me tell you, it smells delightful.

-She has her front teeth and the 2 next to them all coming in! I have been trying to get a picture but she doesn't cooperate AT ALL.
-Her bouncer is about to get retired (I never saw this day coming, she always LOVED that thing) She doesn't care about it anymore.

-She gets up and around on EVERYTHING with ease, and without getting hurt.

Ordinarily she will pick up the food and stick her fist in her mouth. After many animal cracker pieces, I watched her figure it out! She knew to pick it up with her fingers and not her whole hand. Babies are so smart!
We are also getting better at figuring out the sippy cup. She can pick it up to her mouth but doesn't suck. She has twice, but apparently she forgot.

She's watching ESPN. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but she seems to enjoy sports (this can't be my child!)
Also I actually caught some crawling at the end, and the only reason is she didn't see me filming. She gets distracted when I whip out the camera and never does what she was doing. Lucky me!

We had our 6 month check and shots today. She whined and cried a lot, but we had afterall rudely awoken her from her nap.
She weighs 20.12lbs
27" long
Head is 18"
The nurse commented she acted like a 10 month old!

Well...I've been trying to post some new videos but blogspot here just doesn't wanna let me. So I thought I'd take this time to update you all on her latest developments.

She is going to crawl any day now. She gets on her hands and knees and pushes up onto her feet. She has been giving herself some hand stuffing breaks just long enough to do this. Just today she almost sat herself up too!
She spends much more time rolling around the living room these days, collecting all of Lucy's dog hair like a lint roller. Good times, really.
She has also graduated to bathing directly in the sink! Much messier! Not too sure I like this.
She is such a wiggleworm I can't hold her still long enough to change her diaper. It really is a challenge.
She can officially stand unsupported, we just have to keep her balanced. She really likes this!

New developments

She gives me kisses! It's so precious!
When we play on the floor she will play, look up and reach for me for hugs and kisses, then resume playing. She does this over and over. I can't complain, I love it. And yes she gives me open mouthed, sloppy kisses like she is going to eat my face. It's the best!

She is such an excellent eater! I have to make her food in a coffee mug now, she eats so much. We started with bananas, carrots, sweet potatoes, and now we're on butternut squash. She seems to have the food thing down pat. So now it doesn't matter what I shovel in her mouth, she'll open up without question. Now if I can get her to keep her hands out of her mouth I'll have a lot less clean up!

She isn't crawling yet but makes a real good effort. She gets on all fours and pulls a scoot/roll thing. She always get off her blanket, I don't think I can get a big enough one at this point to contain her. There's no stopping her now!
